Jonty Rhodes names ex-South African player whose gamestyle matches with Ayush Badoni

New Delhi: Indian youngster Ayush Badoni has been making the headlines for his explosive batting skills in the inaugural edition of the Delhi Premier League (DPL) T20 2024. The 24-year-old is the captain of the South Delhi Superstarz and has given sleepless nights to the young and emerging bowlers in the tournament.

Badoni has ablazed 515 runs from eight innings at a staggering strike rate of 226.87 with the help of four fifties and a hundred. His latest vintage knock of 165 runs from just 55 balls against North Delhi Strikers helped him set numerous records, though not considered in the official T20 stats because DPL’s lack of ‘List A’ status under the International Cricket Council (ICC).

One of the uncounted records shattered by Badoni was hitting most sixes by a batter in a single T20 innings. The Delhi youngster dispatched 19 sixes in the stands, toying with the line and lengths of the North Delhi bowling attack.

Badoni has played 42 Indian Premier League (IPL) matches for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the past three seasons (2022-2024). Jonty Rhodes, who is the current fielding coach of LSG, was full of praise for the young Indian uncapped player and likened his batting to that of former teammate Herschelle Gibbs.

“He is a precocious talent that is for sure, he is short so he has got a low centre of gravity. He gets under the good length deliveries he can hit it anywhere around the ground, he has such fast hands. Justin Langer was so impressed with the sheer talent that he has,” Rhodes told news agency PTI.

“He reminds me a bit of Herschelle Gibbs. He has tremendous hitting ability and when he matches that with calmness, presence of mind, good game plan, he will become a really tough guy to bowl to because he can play both conventional and unconventional shots with ease,” he added.

Badoni reacts to Rhodes’ message

Badoni was thankful for the compliment received by South Africa’s greatest fielder and expressed contentment on meeting him soon, though there is no assurance whether the player will continue at LSG with the possibility of IPL 2025 auctions.

“Jonty and I have a great relationship. I want to thank him for his kind words and just want to say that ‘see you soon, Jonty’,” Badoni told PTI videos.

Ayush Badoni missed South Delhi’s match against North Delhi on Sunday as opener Priyansh Arya led the team in his absence.
