Congress levels fresh charges against Madhabi Buch, says why PM Modi is silent

New Delhi: Congress on Friday levelled more conflict of interest allegations against Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch. Congress leader Pawan Khera, who is party’s media and publicity department head, said between 2018 and 2024, Buch as a whole-time member and later head of the markets regulator body, received rental income amounting to Rs 2.16 crore from ‘Carol Info Services Limited’, a company affiliated to Wockhardt Limited.

Addressing a press conference, Khera said that Sebi was probing Wockhardt Limited in regards to several cases, including that of insider trading during 2023.

“The SEBI chairperson was appointed on March 2, 2022, by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, which the prime minister heads. Was her appointment cleared on the condition that she could maintain her previous financial relationships, provided she acted in line with the wishes of the prime minister and his close associates?” the Congress leader asked.

“Madhabi Puri Buch had become a whole time member of SEBI in 2018. Now after becoming a whole time member, she gave one of his properties on rent. In the financial year 2018-19, she got a rent of Rs 7 lakh. She received rent of Rs 36 lakh for the same property in 2019-20, which increased to Rs 46 lakh by this year. The name of the company to which Madhabi Puri Buch gave her property is Carol Info Services Limited, which is a part of Wockhardt Company. Wockhardt is the same company, complaints related to which SEBI is continuously dealing with. This is completely a matter of corruption,” Khera said.

Meanwhile, another Congress leader, Jairam Ramesh, asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to comment and take action on the issue of Madhabi Buch.

“By the NSE’s data, there are now 10 crore Indians with unique PANs who have some form of investment in this market. Don’t they deserve better? Why does he not move? What is he afraid of?” Ramesh said in a post on X.

Khera challenged the SEBI chief to come out clean and deny the charges against her.
