New Delhi: The Sports ministry on Tuesday announced cash awards for India’s medallists at Paralympics after record 29 medals haul in Paris.
India captured 29 medals at Paris, 10 more than the Tokyo edition, to make it the country’s most successful Paralympics campaign.
With seven gold, nine silver, and 13 bronze medals, India claimed the 18th spot in the final standings, up by six spots from Tokyo, where they had claimed five gold, eight silver and six bronze medals.
At Tokyo Paralympics, India had sent a contingent of 54 athletes increasing it to 84 for Paris to make it the most sent by the country in the competition.
To recognise the efforts of the athletes, Sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya handed the gold medal winners cheques of Rs 75 lakh, silver medallists received Rs 50 lakh each while Rs 30 lakh cheques were handed over to the bronze grabbing players.
Target shifts to 2028 LA Paralympics
Those athletes who made a mark in mixed team events will be given Rs 22.5 lakh, Mandaviya said at an event organised to felicitate the medal winners.
The Sports minister also added that now the aim shifts towards the Los Angeles Paralympics in 2028 where the aim will be to improve on the Paris mark.
“The country is rising in Paralympics and para sports. From four medals in 2016, India have won 19 medals in Tokyo and 29 in Paris with 18th place finish,” Mandaviya said while pledging support to para-athletes.
“We will provide all the facilities to all of our para-athletes so that we can win more medals and gold medals in 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics.”
With 29 medals, India also crossed the 50-medal mark in Paralympics history leading to a grand reception of the players on Tuesday in New Delhi.
