New Delhi: In a bizarre and surprising turn of events amid the ongoing fight between the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president and most of its executive members, the email IDs of the IOA reportedly have been suspended.
When contacting IOA on their official email ID ‘ioa@olympic.ind.in’ the message returned saying “because the address couldn’t be found, or is unable to receive mail”. Some of the email IDs of members and president are down.
After investigating the matter, it was revealed that the email service provider had discontinued the services due to the unpaid dues. The IOA office later confirmed this development to The Indian Express.
Tensions between IOA chief and executive committee
The fight between the IOA chief and executive committee has been ongoing since the appointment of the CEO Raghu Iyer. The EC opposed his appointment due to his high salary package of INR 2.4 crore. The EC later also objected to the appointment of the executive assistant for the IOA president.
The reason for the non-payment of dues remains unclear but the insiders believe that the email suspension could be related to the objections raised by the EC members. The email addresses have been not working for about a week now.
IOA president PT Usha and Treasure Sahdev Yadav are also not in agreement and both in the absence of the Chief Executive Officer, should be running the IOA’s bank account. Ajay Patel is in charge of the finance committee and the treasurer also needs to sign cheques. But due to the ongoing fight over the CEO’s appointment, he is yet to be the sole controller of IOA’s account.
“Accounts shall be maintained in such Scheduled or Nationalized Bank or Banks, as may be approved by the Executive Council in the name of the Association and shall be operated by the CEO in coordination and consultation with the President and Treasurer. In the absence of the availability of a CEO for any reason, the account shall be jointly operated by the Treasurer and the President” says The constitution.
Even after the Olympics, The Executive committee and IOA president still haven’t found any solution and the unavailability of email has been a big issue in the office. There are regular communications with the IOC which include bidding processes and various other enquiries and if the mail doesn’t work on time things could move backwards as the IOA needs to submit entries for the Asian Winters Games in Harbin, China.
The ongoing issue could also lead to trouble for the IOA in future communications with the sports ministry and the Sports Authority of India (SAI).
