In what comes as a piece of bittersweet news for the Mumbai Indians, Jasprit Bumrah has inched closer to a return to full fitness, but remains unavailable at least for the team’s next two matches. Bumrah will miss today’s IPL 2025 match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). He is also likely to miss MI’s next game at home against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on April 7.
According to ESPNcricinfo, Bumrah is getting closer to returning to the field after an intense rehab following a stress-related discomfort in his lower back. He has been out of action since the conclusion of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia in January.
Bumrah’s road to recovery
Bumrah, it has been learnt, is gradually building his bowling workload at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. According to the ESPNcricinfo report, he is close to taking the final round of fitness tests. The ace pacer can only link up with MI in IPL 2025 after getting the all-clear from the BCCI medical team.
Bumrah, who is treading cautiously in the rehab, reportedly wants to ensure he is totally fit before making a comeback. He has set his sights on getting fully fit for India’s five-Test series in England, starting on June 28.
Impact of Bumrah’s absence
Five-time champions MI have played three matches in the ongoing edition of the IPL, winning one and losing two. The Mumbai-based franchise has handed debuts to the uncapped trio of Satyanarayana Raju, Vignesh Puthur and Ashwani Kumar. In Bumrah’s absence, Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar have led the attack while Hardik Pandya has been the other seam-bowling option in the line-up.
This is the first update of Bumrah’s fitness since March 19, when Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene had opened up on the “challenge” of playing without Bumrah at the start of the season. Earlier, it was understood that Bumrah would join the squad in April but his return has been delayed.
Bumrah has only played for MI in the IPL. Since making his debut in 2013, he has picked up 165 wickets in 133 matches in his career so far. He missed the 2023 season due to a back injury.
