Amid political protests in Bangladesh, BCCI ensures strict security for touring team

New Delhi: Bangladesh landed in India for their two-Test and three-T20I series with the Board of Control for Cricket in India keeping in place strict security measures for the touring team.

India are scheduled to host Bangladesh for the first Test in Chennai from September 19 followed by the second five-day game in Kanpur from September 27. It is followed by a three T20I series.

The series will be held in the backdrop of intense political tensions in Bangladesh that saw the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina following a students’ protest last month.

It led to communal clashes, with reports of attacks on minorities, particularly Hindus, that led to Hasina taking refuge in India.

An interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been put in charge in Bangladesh. The interim government is reportedly keen to request for extradition of Hasina, who remains protected in a secure environment in India.

The BCCI has ensured tight security protocols with two police vans accompanying the team bus to the Chennai hotel, where they were welcomed by the staff with rose petals.

The visiting team will be placed in one floor of the hotel, while armed security personnel will be present to guard them, as is the norm, with the team beginning training on Monday.

In the wake of the civil unrest in Bangladesh, BCCI secretary Jay Shah assured Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) of providing sufficient security measures during their three week tour.
