Would have been proud even if Yuvraj Singh died to win India World Cup: Yograj Singh

New Delhi: Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh’s father Yograj Singh has claimed he would have been proud even if he lost his son to cancer during the 2011 ODI World Cup as India lifted the elusive trophy. Despite battling cancer, Yuvraj played an instrumental role in helping India win the 2011 ODI World Cup to bring an end to the country’s 28-year-long wait for a second World Cup crown.

Yuvraj was named the Player of the Tournament in the World Cup for his impressive all-round show. It was a dream campaign for the all-rounder as he notched up 362 runs and scalped 15 wickets to help India lift the trophy. Yuvraj bagged as many as 4 Player of the Match awards during the World Cup and stood up for the Men in Blue under pressure on several occasions.

Yuvraj, who was spitting blood during the World Cup, was diagnosed with cancer 8 months after the conclusion of the tournament. He was ruled out of cricket for a year and underwent treatment in the USA before making his international comeback for India in 2012. Lauding Yuvraj for his spirited show in the World Cup, his father Yograj said he would have been proud of his son even if he lost him to cancer.

“For our country, if Yuvraj Singh had died from cancer and had won India the World Cup, I would have still been a proud father. I still am very proud of him. I have told him this over the phone as well. I wanted him to play even when he was spitting blood. I told him, ‘Don’t worry, you won’t die. Win this World Cup for India,'” Yograj said during an interview on on Unfiltered by Samdish YouTube channel.

Yuvraj Singh – Hero of India’s World Cup wins

One of the best middle-order batters and all-rounders to have played for India, Yuvraj played a crucial role in India’s memorable triumphs in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup. Yuvraj slammed an unbeaten 57 in the semi-final of the 2011 ODI World Cup against Australia to rescue the Men in Blue from a pressure situation and take them home in the 261-run chase with Suresh Raina.

However, his career suffered a huge dip after he was diagnosed with cancer as Yuvraj struggled for consistency and was in and out of the Indian team regularly. The star all-rounder retired from all forms of the game in 2019 after playing 40 Tests, 304 ODIs and 58 T20Is in his career. He amassed 1900, 8701 and 1177 runs in the three formats, respectively.
