Record prize money for Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 as ICC announces equal pay

Record prize money for Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 as ICC announces equal pay

New Delhi: In a landmark decision, the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday announced record prize money for the winners of the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. ICC confirmed that the winners of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 will receive the same prize money as their male counterparts. It will be the first ICC event which will have the same prize money for both male and female players.

The landmark decision for equal pay was taken at ICC’s annual conference in July this year. The winner of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 will be awarded USD 2.34 million, which is the same amount that was awarded to Rohit Sharma-led Team India after winning the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 title earlier this year.

The prize money of 2.34 million for this year’s Women’s T20 World Cup marks an increase of 134% of on the USD 1 million prize money that the Australian women’s team was awarded after claiming their sixth T20 World Cup title in South Africa last year. The runners-up, on the other hand, will be pocketing a sum of USD 1.17 million, an increase of 134 per cent from the USD 500,000 rewarded to the runners-up of the last edition of the tournament.

Cricket only major sport to offer equal prize money in men’s and women’s World Cups: ICC

The ICC board had decided to achieve the equity pay target in the men’s and women’s games by 2030. However, the decision was fast-tracked making cricket the first major sport in the world to offer equal prize money in the men’s and women’s World Cups. The significant move marks a milestone moment in the sport’s history and highlights ICC’s commitment towards prioritising and promoting the growth of women’s cricket around the globe.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and New Zealand Cricket (NZC) have already taken significant steps towards addressing pay parity by announcing equal pay for their men’s and women’s cricket teams. The ICC’s move to bring pay parity across major events in international cricket sets the right precedent for other boards to follow.

“Teams will now receive equal prize money for the equivalent finishing position at comparable events as well as the same amount for winning a match at those events. The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 event prize money is only higher on account of 10 additional teams participating and 32 more matches played,” ICC said in a statement.

USD 7,958,080 prize pool for Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, 225% increase from 2023

The ICC has increased the overall prize pool to US $7,958,080 for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, marking a remarkable increase of 225% from the overall prize pool for the T20 World Cup 2023. While the winners and the runners-up will take home USD 2.34 million and USD 1.17 million, respectively, the other two semi-finalists will earn USD 675,000 each, an increase of USD 465,000 from the last edition.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 will be the first major tournament where the women’s players will receive the same prize money as their male counterparts.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
