New Delhi: The anticipation and excitement are reaching fever pitch as India and Bangladesh gear up for a high-octane Test series. The two-match series is slated to begin on September 19, Thursday at the M.A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Several players from the teams will be under the spotlight and Yashasvi Jaiswal is one of them. The left-handed opener has made a sensational start to his Test career, scoring 1,028 runs in nine Tests at a remarkable average of 69 including three centuries and four half-centuries.
Jaiswal impressed earlier this year by scoring double centuries in two consecutive Test matches against England. Jaiswal was named Player of the Match after becoming the highest run-getter for India (712) in a series against England.
Jaiswal eyes WTC history
Jaiswal has amassed 1028 runs in the World Test Championship 2023-25 and aims to etch his name in the history books when India face Bangladesh in the home series. The 22-year-old batter is just 132 runs away from becoming the highest run-getting Indian in a single edition of the WTC.
If Jaiswal manages to surpass the aggregate, he will achieve a feat that not even Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have managed to pull off.
Jaiswal will surpass former India captain Ajinkya Rahane who scored 1159 runs in the WTC 2019-21 cycle. He has already become one of the three Indian batters, alongside Rahane and Rohit, to score 1000 runs in a single cycle in his WTC debut season.
The southpaw is joint-second in the WTC 2023-25 run-scoring chart, tied with England opener Ben Duckett on 1,028 runs.
He needs 371 runs more runs to overtake Joe Root, who leads the table with 1,398 runs.
India head into the series sitting atop the WTC standings with a points percentage of 68.52. Following the Bangladesh series, India will take on New Zealand in a three-Test series at home before embarking on a highly-anticipated tour of Australia for five Tests.
