Who is Hasan Mahmud? Bangladesh pacer who demolished Indian batting in Chennai

New Delhi: The Indian Test season began on a dull note as visitors Bangladesh wreaked havoc with their pace bowling on the very first day (Thursday) of the first Test against India in Chennai. Hasan Mahmud, a right-arm fast bowler, decimated the top batting order of Team India, sending back stalwarts like skipper Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli.

Having opted to bowl first at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, Bangladesh made good notes about the track saying that the “grassy” pitch has moisture and they would like to take advantage of that. Even Rohit admitted during the toss that he was looking to bowl first and the fans soon found out that bowling was the first choice for this wicket.

Mahmud, a 24-year-old started his spell alongside Taskin Ahmed, who opened the attack. Working in tandem with his senior, Mahmud got success in the fifth over when he sent Rohit (6 off 19; a four) packing off the first ball of the over. Rohit got a thick outside edge which landed safely in skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto’s hands at the second slip.

The young pacer added to India’s misery in the eighth over when he sent back Gill for a duck. Having faced seven deliveries, Gill looked to be struggling against the Bangla pace-duo and the next delivery ultimately ended his struggles when he tried to send one down the fine leg side but rather edged it to the keeper Litton Das.

Mahmud added a cherry on the top with the prized wicket of none other than Kohli (6 off 6) in the 10th over, who too edged in the delivery’s path, mistiming the shot, as the ball went straight to Das’ gloves. After the troika departed, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant took hold of the innings, doing the rebuilding work.
