Bayern Munich faces €150,000 penalty after fan misconduct in DFB Pokal clash

New Delhi: Bayern Munich has been fined €150,000 by the German Football Federation (DFB) after their fans used pyrotechnics during a German Cup match against SSV Ulm. The incident took place on August 16, during Bayern’s 4-0 victory in the competition’s first round.

At least 70 firecrackers and four sets of fireworks were ignited by Bayern supporters, causing a smoke-filled three-minute delay as the game was temporarily halted.

The DFB’s statement noted that some of these fireworks were directed towards the pitch, creating a safety risk. As part of the ruling, Bayern Munich is allowed to allocate up to €50,000 of this fine towards safety or anti-violence measures, provided they submit proof of such investments to the federation by September 2025.

Club officials accepted the decision, underscoring their commitment to addressing fan-related disruptions and maintaining safe match environments. The ruling comes as Bayern Munich continues to compete in the German Cup, with a challenging fixture against Bayer Leverkusen scheduled for December 3 in the last 16.

Bayern Munich is not new to such sanctions. In 2018, they faced a cumulative fine of €77,000 for various incidents, including fans lighting smoke bombs and displaying derogatory banners in games against teams like Paderborn and Borussia Dortmund. At Hannover, Bayern fans even set off flares, leading to interruptions and game delays.

The club’s season finale against Frankfurt that year also saw fans igniting pyrotechnics, further drawing the DFB’s attention to such repeated violations

Bayern Munich, currently leading the Bundesliga, now faces the dual task of both progressing in the cup and improving measures to manage fan behaviour. The DFB’s fine highlights ongoing efforts within German football to ensure the safety of players, fans, and officials alike by discouraging such incidents.
