IND vs BAN 1st Test, Day 2 Talking points: Bumrah & Co put hosts in driver’s seat

New Delhi: The action of the second day of the first Test between India and Bangladesh fold up with Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant walking back to the pavilion remaining unbeaten. It was a day that started with Ravindra Jadeja missing out on his well-deserved fifth Test ton.

India were bowled out for 376 thanks to Jadeja (86) and Ravichandran Ashwin (113) digging the hosts out of the whole with their alliance of 199 runs for the seventh wicket. The Indian pacers rallied past Bangladesh’s head, neck and backbone of the batting unit.

Here are a few talking points from what decided India having the upper hand in the game on Day 2.

Jasprit Bumrah spearheads the pace pack

Jasprit Bumrah was back at doing what he loves. Taking wickets. Playing his first competitive cricket game since leading India to the T20 World Cup triumph in June, Bumrah took just six balls to get his name on the wicket sheet. An angling length delivery coming on the top of the off-stump, all Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam does is shoulder the arms to leave it.

Ah Sigh! Was the expression that wore on his face. Not for the first time batters have that reaction when they fail to read Bumrah and are eventually cleaned up. That was just the beginning of the indomitable Bumrah’s spell. Next on the cards was veteran Bangladesh player Mushfiqur Rahim.

Short of lenght, closer to off-stump, top of off-stump, and wide length – those were the variations bowled by Bumrah to set the trap for Mushfiqur just after an over for getting hit for a boundary. Then came the angling delivery which Mushfiqur chose to swing. The result wasn’t in his favour as KL Rahul took a great catch in the slip cordon to avert the biggest threat from the Bangladesh camp.

Bumrah later claimed two more wickets from Bangladesh’s tail to finish with 4 for 50. He was complemented by fellow pacers Akash Deep (2 for 19) and Mohammed Siraj (2 for 30). With Ravindra Jadeja breaking the promising 51-run partnership between Litton and Shakib, and then later sending Shakib packing, it was a powerful display from the home team, shifting from the popular narrative that Indians dominate in spin-friendly conditions.

Bangladesh failed to capitalise

After defeating Pakistan in a historic two-match Test series in Rawalpindi, the confidence ensued in the Bangladesh camp on taking on any big side. But that confidence wasn’t translated on the red soil of Chepauk. The lack of intent was one of the many hiccups that the visitors underlined in the batting collapse. Poor shot selection, tempting to play against the run-of-play, feeble defence. Even Litton failed to capitalise on the growing partnership with Shakib, it was their chance to repeat what R Ashwin and Jadeja did yesterday.

Arduous task for Bangladesh to make a comeback

India were reduced to 81 for 3 at the stumps of the second day. The Rohit Sharma-led side sits in the driver’s seat with a clinical lead of 308 runs. With seven more wickets and three more days left in this game, the hosts can only surmount the lead further. Bangladesh bowlers have a task to cut out here. Restrict the opposition under 350 to dent the psychological pressure and then outrightly go for the chase to pull back things in their favour.
