New Delhi: Star Australian batter and stand-in captain Steve Smith scripted history in the first Test match against Sri Lanka at Galle International Stadium on Wednesday, January 29. He became the 15th player in Test cricket history to complete 10,000 runs.

Smith completed the milestone with a single, prompting a warm applause from the Sri Lankan players and a standing ovation from the crowd, who acknowledged his brilliant achievement. The 35-year-old joined legendary Australian batters like Ricky Ponting (13,378 runs), Allan Border (11,174 runs), and Steve Waugh (10,927 runs) as the only players to have accomplished this milestone.

He fell just one run short during the fifth Test against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground but finally completed the milestone on the opening day of the first Test against Sri Lanka. He achieved the feat in just 115 Test matches and 205 innings. He is only the second active cricketer after Joe Root to join the 10,000-club.

 

Fastest to 10,000 runs in Test cricket (by matches)

Steve Smith also became the second fastest batter to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket. Only Brian Lara is ahead of him on the list, who reached the milestone in 111 Test matches. Kumar Sangakkara is third on this list while Pakistan’s Younis Khan is in fourth position.

Usman Khawaja’s century put Australia on top

Australia opted to bat in the first Test at Galle International Stadium and got off to a sensational start as Travis Head and Usman Khawaja forged a 92-run partnership for the opening wicket. Prabath Jayasuriya dismissed Head on 57 runs and Jaffrey Vandersay removed Marnus Labuschagne on 20 runs. But Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja stitched a 102*-run partnership for the third wicket. Khawaja notched up his 16th Test century while Smith scored his 42nd fifty.
