‘New chapter in…’: PM Modi hails Indian chess contingent for double Olympiad gold

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt wishes to the Indian chess contingent which scripted history by bagging two gold medals on Sunday at the 45th International Chess Federation (FIDE) Olympiad held in Budapest. Both men’s and women’s teams of India secured gold medals and the PM lauded the efforts made by the Indian players, describing the victory as a “new chapter in India’s sports trajectory.”

In a historic first, both the Indian men’s and women’s teams came out victorious at the Chess Olympiad. Taking to his social media account on “X” (formerly Twitter), PM Modi said, “Historic win for India as our chess contingent triumphs at the 45th #FIDE Chess Olympiad! India has won the gold in both the open and women’s categories. Congratulations to our incredible Men’s and Women’s Chess Teams. This remarkable achievement marks a new chapter in India’s sports trajectory. May this success inspire generations of chess enthusiasts to excel in the game.”

India assert dominance in world chess

The men’s team consisted of D Gukesh, Ramesh Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, Vidit Gujrathi, and Pentala Harikrishna who defeated Slovenia to clinch the gold medal. As Gukesh and Erigaisi claimed victories and gave India an early lead of 2-0, the gold was secured after Praggnanandhaa’s win and a draw pulled off by Vidit, with the score line 3.5-0.5.

Meanwhile, the women’s team which featured Harika Dronavalli, Rameshbabu Vaishali, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agarwal, and Tania Sachdev mirrored what the men’s team did as they bagged another gold for the nation with a dominant 3.5-0.5 victory against Azerbaijan. While Harika, Divya, and Vantika won their matches, Vaishali earned a draw.

PM Modi, who was in New York on Sunday where he addressed the Indian diaspora at Nassau Coliseum, acknowledged Team India’s double-gold effort saying “Bharat is full of energy and dreams. “He applauded the chess champions, adding, “Every day we see new achievements. Today, both India’s men’s and women’s teams have won gold medals at the Chess Olympiad.”
