New Delhi: Senior Indian shuttler PV Sindhu has found a temporary coach as the double-Olympic medallist plans her return on the court next month. She won’t be returning to Bengaluru anytime soon instead she has started training at the Gachibowli Stadium in Hyderabad, as per media reports.
According to a report by The Indian Express, former Indian Olympian Anup Sridhar will travel with the India No.1 in October for Arctic Open (October 8-13) and Denmark Open (October 15-20) in the European cycle of the BWF tournaments. Sridhar, who had a short coaching stint with Lakshya Sen until January this year, will be on a trail-basis with Sindhu.
“We are looking for a new coach with Agus’s contract ending. We are keen to see how a partnership with Anup Sridhar works out, and are looking at 4-5 names going forward. Anup will travel to Finland and will train her in Hyderabad in coming days,” PV Sindhu’s father Ramana was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.
In January this year, Sindhu started training with Indonesia coach Agus Dwi Santoso after parting ways with Muhammad Hafiz Hashim of Malaysia. Ahead of the Paris Olympics 2024 in July, Sindhu announced legendary Indian player Prakash Padukone as her mentor for the Summer Games.
Sindhu to train in Hyderabad ahead of Europe
Sindhu will train in Hyderabad before travelling to Europe once the BWF season gets into full swing. After bowing out of the Round of 16 t o eventual silver medallist He Bing Jiao, the 29-year-old has set the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya as her next target. She claimed silver medal in the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta after losing to Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu Ying in the final in straight games 13-21, 16-21.
“Sindhu has nothing left to prove, but she still thinks she can aim at the Asian Games,” Ramana said.
PV Sindhu will look for her first major badminton title after she last won the Singapore Open in 2022. She has won silver in the 2016 Rio Olympics and bronze in 2020 Tokyo Olympics. India’s most successful Olympian shuttler didn’t return with the medal from the Summer Games for the first time.
