New Delhi: Explosive Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) batter Abhishek Sharma had a bittersweet outing in his team’s Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Friday. Playing at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, Abhishek produced a thunderous six that not only pleased the fans but also brought out unexpected financial trouble.
The southpaw, known for his hard-hitting abilities, smashed a delivery into the air that ended up crashing the windshield of a car that was on display near the boundary ropes. The incident happened during the early phase of SRH’s innings when the young batter faced a short-of-length delivery and responded with a terrific pull shot over deep midwicket.
The ball sailed into the stands but first landed on the windshield of a Tata Curvv SUV, which was stationed just beyond the boundary line. But as he shattered the glass of the car, he will now have to pay a hefty sum of Rs. 5 lakh, for a sort of bizarre rule which IPL had set at the start of the season.
Why Rs. 5 lakh penalty on Abhishek Sharma?
Ahead of the season’s start, a clause was introduced as a part of a pre-season initiative tied between the IPL and the automotive sponsor. Tata Motors had announced an initiative which was aimed at promoting cricket in the rural areas of the nation. According to this, any player who inadvertently damages the display car during a match would be bound to donate cricket kits worth Rs. 5 lakhs to support rural cricket development.
Abhishek, who, although he did it unintentionally, thus triggered this philanthropic cause. The funds will be directed toward providing cricketing equipment to the underserved regions and will give the budding cricketers a better platform to play the game.
SRH win by 42 runs
SRH eventually won the match by 42 runs, registering their fifth victory of the season. They looked to be in a fiery form, which they had been missing for quite some time, as it led to their elimination from the tournament.
