Kathmandu: Nepal’s Flood Forecasting Division has issued a warning for several parts of the country, alerting citizens to the rising water levels in key rivers following days of heavy rainfall. The alert spans from the Arun Basin in the east to the Banganga Basin in the west, impacting a wide swath of the country. The division has urged people in these regions to exercise extreme caution as many rivers are now flowing above danger levels.
Regions and Rivers at Risk
The primary rivers under watch include the Arun, Dudhkoshi, Sunkoshi, Bagmati, Narayani, Tinau, and Banganga, along with their tributaries. According to the division’s press release, several of these rivers have already exceeded warning thresholds, with the Sunkoshi and Bagmati rivers surpassing danger levels. Both rivers are reported to be rising, posing an immediate threat to nearby areas.
Rivers like Arun, Dudhkoshi, and Narayani have crossed their warning levels, and the floodwaters are steadily increasing. With relentless rainfall continuing to hit the catchment areas, further escalation is anticipated.
24-Hour Flood Watch Issued
The Department’s 24-hour flood alert is in effect, warning residents in low-lying and vulnerable areas to remain vigilant. Roads and homes across the region have already been inundated, making transportation and day-to-day life challenging for many.
The release further noted, “The situation is particularly dire due to the unrelenting rainfall, which is expected to persist for at least the next 24 hours. This ongoing precipitation is likely to worsen flooding conditions in the affected regions.”
Calls for Evacuation and Safety Measures
Authorities are urging residents to stay updated on weather reports and follow official guidelines to ensure their safety. Those living in flood-prone areas have been asked to be ready for possible evacuation. “If you are in a low-lying area, it is crucial to prepare for immediate evacuation,” the division cautioned, further advising people to avoid unnecessary travel and relocate to safer, elevated regions if needed.
In an effort to coordinate rescue and relief efforts, the division provided a toll-free emergency number (1155) for assistance, urging residents to reach out for help if required. Local authorities and emergency services are also on standby to manage any evacuation operations.
With conditions expected to worsen, the department has emphasised the importance of taking proactive measures to mitigate the risks of the ongoing flood crisis. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
