New Delhi: The much-anticipated retention rules for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction are expected soon as the IPL Governing Council meets on Saturday, September 28. Fans and all ten franchises have been eagerly waiting for confirmation from the BCCI on how many players they will be allowed to retain ahead of the next season.
As per a report in Cricbuzz, the announcement is expected as soon as the Governing Council meets on Saturday at around 11:30 AM. The meeting will take place in Bengaluru. An announcement regarding the retention policy can be expected after the meeting concludes.
The rules for the IPL 2025 mega auction will be high on the agenda at the IPL Governing Council meeting as there is not much time left for the auction which is likely to place in November this year. Some franchises have already started planning their retentions and releases, however, they will be able to formulate their strategies only after they know the number of retentions they will be allowed.
Apart from the number of retentions, the IPL Governing Council is also expected to take a final call regarding the venue of the mega auction. As per reports, Saudi Arabia is a potential destination for the mega auction this time around with Riyadh keen on hosting the mega event.
How many retentions will be allowed in IPL 2025 mega auction?
There have been multiple reports floating around the potential number of retentions that will be allowed in the upcoming mega auction. The teams were allowed a total of 4 retentions with no RTMs in the IPL 2022 mega auction. However, the number is likely to increase this year after several teams expressed their interest in having more retentions to maintain their core and ensure continuity in their brand.
The likes of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the reigning champions and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were among the teams who were in favour of having more retentions during the meeting between franchise owners and the BCCI officials a couple of months back. As per Cricbuzz, the number of retentions can be anywhere between 5-6, including the RTM option.
Will RTM be back?
The Right To Match (RTM) was not part of the IPL 2022 mega auction. However, it can make its comeback in the upcoming mega auction. RTM allows a team to buy their released player for the same amount as the winning bid at the auction. As per a report in Indian Express, RTM is unlikely to be part of the IPL 2025 mega auction. However, we will have to wait for official confirmation.
The retentions rules for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 auction are expected to be announced soon by the BCCI as the IPL Governing Council is set to meet on Saturday. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
