New Zealand concede their second biggest innings lead in Test cricket history

New Delhi: New Zealand men’s cricket team is on the brink of a massive defeat in the ongoing second Test match against Sri Lanka in Galle. The Tim Southee-led team was left in tatters after getting bowled out for a minuscule 88 in the first innings on Day 3 at the Galle International Stadium.

Phenomenal bowling show from left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya and right-arm off-breaker Nishan Peiris saw the Black Caps batting crumble after two weary and tired days in the field. Jayasuriya claimed six wickets, his eighth five-wicket haul in Test cricket, accounting for the key dismissals of Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell on Saturday morning. Devon Conway, Tom Blundell, Glenn Phillips and Tim Southee were other victims of the wily spinner.

Meanwhile, Peiris dismissed three left-handers in Ajaz Patel (the nightwatchman for New Zealand), Rachin Ravindra and Mitchell Santner as Sri Lanka clinched a humungous lead of 514 runs in the first innings. Santner (29) was the top run-scorer for the tourists in one of their dismal batting show in the subcontinent conditions.

This was the second most runs conceded by New Zealand in the first innings in Test cricket. The 570-run lead given by the Kiwis during the Pakistan tour of the Lahore Test in 2002 remains to be the highest Test lead conceded by the men from Down Under. It is the third-most runs conceded overall by a team.

Which team has conceded most runs in first innings in Tests?

The unwanted record for most runs leaked in terms of first-innings lead in a Test match happens to be held during the 1938 Ashes. Australia conceded 702 runs in the first innings against rivals England in The Oval Test. England posted a mammoth 903 on the board, riding on Leonard Hutton’s 364.

In response, the Australian innings was shot down to 201 with England pacer Bill Bowes (5 for 49) breathing fire. The hosts eventually won by an innings and 579 runs.
