IPL 2025 auction: Franchises allowed 5 retentions, one Right To Match also included

New Delhi: In a significant move from the IPL Governing Council on Saturday, the retention rules and regulations were announced ahead of the 2025 season mega auction after a meeting held in Bengaluru. Each franchise will be allowed to retain up to five players ahead of the 2025 auction which is scheduled to take place in November. This is an increase from the previous mega auction held in 2022, where franchises were allowed to retain a maximum of four players.

However, the privilege of retaining five players comes at a massive cost. Each of the franchise that opts to retain all the five players will have to allocate a mammoth sum of Rs 75 crore from their overall purse. This will leave maximum franchises with limited funds for acquiring new talent for their teams at the mega auction. Each franchise will have a purse of Rs 120 crore to build a squad for IPL 2025, which is Rs 20 crore more than last year.

One RTM card allowed

Apart from this, it was also decided that each team will be allowed to use only one Right-to-Match (RTM) card during the auction. The RTM card allows the franchises to match the highest bid for a player they had previously released.

BIG UPDATES FOR IPL RETENTIONS (Sports Tak):

– 5 Retention & 1 RTM.
– No cap on Indians and overseas.
– Teams will pay 75cr if they wish to retain all 5.
– Total purse is 120cr.
– Teams can adjust Retention and RTM as per their wish (1+5RTM or 2+4RTM).

“The first retention will cost Rs 18 crore followed by second retention of Rs 14 crore and third retention of Rs 11 crore. However if a franchise opts for fourth and fifth retentions, they will again have to pay Rs 18 crore and Rs 14 crore respectively. So any franchise opts for all five retentions, then will have only Rs 45 crore to buy or even use their Right To Match (RTM) card to buy another 15 players and prepare a squad. There is no cap on Indian and Overseas retentions,” a senior BCCI and IPL governing council member told news agency PTI.

In addition, the franchises have also been allowed to adjust the retention policy and Right to Match (RTM) card as per their wish. Earlier, at the Governing Council meeting, it was also decided that a player playing all the league matches in a season will get a sum of Rs 1.05 crores in addition to his contracted amount for the particular season.

Franchises have been allowed 5 retentions and one Right To Match (RTM) card has also been included ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
