Shardul Thakur rushed to hospital in Lucknow after Day 2 of Irani Cup – Report

New Delhi: India and Mumbai all-rounder Shardul Thakur on Wednesday was reportedly said to be taken to a hospital in Lucknow because of a high fever amid the ongoing Irani Cup clash between Mumbai and Rest of India at the Ekana Cricket Stadium.

According to a report by The Indian Express, Shardul was rushed to a local hospital after the action of Day 2. His fever was recorded at 102°F. He also carried mild fever on the first day (Tuesday, October 1) of the Irani Cup 2024, but his condition exacerbated following the 73-run stand with double centurion Sarfaraz Khan (221*) for the ninth wicket.

Shardul scored 36 runs off 59 balls, smashing four boundaries and a six, to power Mumbai past 500-run mark. He was cleaned up by Madhya Pradesh off-spinner Saransh Jain just three balls before the end of the gameplay.

“He was not feeling well for the entire day and was running on high fever, which was the main reason he came out to bat late. He was feeling weak and he slept in the dressing room after taking medicine,” a source close to the development was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

“But he wanted to bat despite feeling low. We have got his blood test done for malaria and dengue. We are waiting for the results. Till then, he will spend the night in hospital,” the source added.

Shardul had undergone a foot surgery in London in June, according to the report, after sustaining an injury during Mumbai’s 42nd Ranji Trophy title.

Sarfaraz Khan’s double-ton puts Mumbai in commanding spot on Day 2

Sarfaraz Khan continued his majestic form in the domestic cricket against the red ball. He became the fourth youngest player to hit a double-century in the Irani Cup, which also marked his fourth 200-plus score in first-class cricket. At the age of 26 years and 346 days, Sarfaraz became the first Mumbai cricketer to hit a double-ton in the Irani Cup.

Hammering 25 fours and four sixes, the middle-order batter was unbeaten on 221 to close Mumbai’s score at 536 for 9. He will resume the innings on the morning of Thursday with last batter Mohammad Juned Khan.
