‘Mediocre cricket’: Social media reacts as IND suffer heavy defeat in Women’s T20 WC

New Delhi: New Zealand defeated India by 58 runs in the match no. 4 of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 at Dubai International Stadium in Dubai on October 4. Batting first, New Zealand scored 160 runs in 20 overs.

New Zealand got off to a flying start as Suzie Bates and Plimmer stitched a 50-run partnership for the first wicket. Bates was removed by Arundhati Reddy in the 8th over while Asha Sobhana dismissed Plimmer on 34 runs.

The Women in Blue bounced back in the match as Renuka Singh removed Amelia Kerr on 13 runs. But Sophie Devine batted brilliantly and notched up a half-century. She smashed an unbeaten 57 runs off 36 balls with the help of seven boundaries. Halliday also played a cameo and scored 16 runs.

Chasing the big target of 161 runs, Team India lost the wicket of Shafali Verma in the second over. Carson picked up her second wicket of the match and removed Smriti Mandhana on 12 runs. Rosemary Mair dismissed the Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur on 15 runs and put the Women in Blue under immense pressure.

After the failure of the top order, middle and lower also struggled to score runs as Team India bundled out for 102 runs in 19 overs. Harmanpreet and Co. will take on arch-rivals Pakistan in their next match on October 6 at the same venue.

India essentially started batting on a pitch that was 60 overs old.

Playing two back to back T20 games on the same track is essentially handing a big disadvantage to the team batting fourth even before they start batting.

ICC needs to plan Women’s World Cups better. #INDvNZ

Can we all agree that the Indian Women’s cricket team is nowhere near the level they’re hyped up to be?#INDvNZ#T20WomensWorldCup
