Cops to guard Gwalior streets from 2PM till midnight for India-Bangladesh 1st T20I

New Delhi: Cops will be all over Gwalior streets on Sunday as security has been tightened ahead of the India vs Bangladesh first T20I match at the Madhavrao Scindia Stadium. The first game of the three-match T20I series will be played on October 6 and due to the continuous protests from the right-wing outfits Bajrang Dal and Hindu Mahasabha, security in the city has been beefed up.

The right-wing outfits continue to oppose the match due to the atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh during the recent political crises. For this reason, prohibitory orders have already been clamped in the city and over 2500 policemen have been deployed to keep the match incident-free and the players safe.

Cops to guard streets from 2PM to midnight

Cops will guard the streets of Gwalior from 2PM on Sunday till midnight, it was announced. The police force will be on duty till spectators reach home after the culmination of the day-night game, police confirmed. Apart from this, senior police officials will also be on duty on Sunday and keep an eye out for any suspicious element trying to create fuss. After prohibitory orders were invoked two days ago, police are also keeping an eye on social media for inflammatory material.

Bajrang Dal’s national convenor Neeraj Dauneria told reporters that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) should cancel the match. “What good playing matches with Pakistan has done. Has terrorism stopped,” he asked. There has been no improvement in Bangladesh as well. “Hindus in Bangladesh are not able to perform Durga Puja,” he added.

Hindu Mahasabha vice-president Jaiveer Bhardwaj said they would stick to their Gwalior bandh, till 1 pm, on Sunday in protest against the match.

“As a result of our protest, the Bangladesh team is confined between hotel and stadium (where they have been going for net practice),” he claimed in a statement.
