New Delhi: The wild Copa América final on Sunday allegedly resulted in a confrontation between the head of the Colombian Football Federation and security guards, leading to his arrest. According to the account, the older Jesurún “became irate” with a security guard who was preventing people from entering a gathering place for the media. The 71-year-old’s son allegedly grabbed the security officer’s neck and assaulted him after the man shoved him back. The two males reportedly got into a fight with security guards after that.
Miami’s WPLG Local 10 reports that the father and son were admitted to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on Monday soon after 4 a.m. They are charged with battery on a designated official or employee, a crime. There was a bustle of activity when the final was contested. There was a major delay before kickoff as spectators jumped over gates and barriers to enter the stadium while officials struggled to control entrance.
The stadium appeared to sustain significant damage as a result. The damaged side rails of the stadium escalator, along with several garments, shoes, Coke cans, and reading glasses that were left behind, were captured on camera and circulated on social media. Thousands of people, many of them shouting children, pushed against security rails near a checkpoint near the southwest entrance to the stadium.
