Mumbai: Navpatrika Puja or Nabapatrika and Kolabou Puja, is observed on Maha Saptami. This celebration holds great importance for Hindus, particularly in regions like Bengal, Assam, Tripura, Kolkata, and Orissa.
On this day, priests invoke the idols of Goddess Durga and carry out various rituals. The Navpatrika consists of nine distinct plants, each representing a different form of the Goddess.
During the Navpatrika Puja, priests recite Vedic mantras and invoke the Goddess through these nine plants, which symbolise her nine manifestations. The Navpatrika is bathed in a nearby river, dressed in a red saree, and placed on a wooden plank to the right of Goddess Durga.
Nine leaves used during Navpatrika Puja and their significance
The following list of nine leaves is used during Navpatrika Puja as per the Dharma Shastra:
1. Kadali Patra
Banana leaves represent Goddess Brahmani.
2. Haldi Patra
Turmeric leaves: The yellow colour signifies Goddess Durga.
3. Jayanti Patra
Common Sesban leaves: Its leaves symbolise Goddess Kartiki.
4. Bael Patra
Bael leaves: Its branches and leaves represent Lord Shiva.
5. Anaar Patra
Pomegranate leaves: Symbolise Goddess Raktadantika.
6. Ashoka Patra
Ashoka Tree leaves represent Goddess Sokarahita.
7. Dhan Patra
Rice leaves represent Goddess Lakshmi.
8. Arum Patra
Arum leaves represent Goddess Chamunda.
9. Aalukee Patra
Colocasia’s leaves represent Goddess Kalika.
