Remembering Ratan Tata: Philanthropist who loved dogs like family

Mumbai: Ratan Tata, the renowned business leader and philanthropist, passed away in a Mumbai hospital on Wednesday at the age of 86. Beyond his legacy as a visionary industrialist, Tata was deeply compassionate, particularly toward animals, especially dogs.

While his impact on the Indian business landscape is well-documented, his profound love for dogs reveals a different side of this esteemed leader. Tata’s compassion for animals and his relentless advocacy for their welfare showcased his character and values, making him a beloved figure not just in business but in the hearts of many.

His empathy was evident through his Instagram posts, where he advocated for strays, encouraged sensitivity toward them, and worked to find them loving homes. His vision also led to the establishment of the Small Animal Hospital in Mumbai (SAHM), a pioneering facility with advanced care for animals.

Ratan Tata prioritised his ailing dog over a prestigious award

In 2018, Tata was set to receive a lifetime achievement award from Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace. Yet, at the last moment, he cancelled his trip due to the failing health of his beloved dog, Tito. Prince Charles expressed admiration for Tata’s dedication, saying, “That’s the man Ratan is. That’s why the Tata Group remains on stable ground.”

Ratan Tata’s pet dogs

Ratan Tata was known for his deep love for animals and had several dogs, including Goa, Tito, and Tango. Goa, a stray puppy that wandered into a colleague’s car in Goa, often accompanied Tata to meetings and earned its name from this amusing incident. Tito was a German Shepherd, while Tango was a Golden Retriever.

Ratan Tata, who shared his home with his dogs Tito and Tango, once remarked on the profound sadness he felt whenever a pet passed away. He explained, “Though the sorrow of parting is great, my home feels too quiet without a dog, so eventually, I bring another into my life.”

He shared an Instagram post, “Today would be the 14th birthday of my late dog, Tito. I still come home to two kind souls and meet so many others in and around the office. While few have the comfort of families, many struggle on the streets, and yet somehow, their affection remains the same. Those of you who strive for the welfare of the voiceless, truly have my respect.”

Additionally, he funded an NGO called “Motopaws,” which focuses on rehabilitating stray dogs. Recognising the need for better animal care, Tata emphasised the importance of pets, stating, “A pet is no different from a member of one’s family today.”

In his final post related to dogs, Tata expressed gratitude to four dogs and their owners who responded to his earlier request for blood donors for a seven-month-old pup in need of a transfusion.

During the monsoon season, Tata shared an Instagram post encouraging people to check under their cars for strays seeking shelter from the rain. His heartfelt message reminded people to be mindful, saying, “Stray cats and dogs often take shelter under our cars. It’s crucial to check before starting the car to prevent accidental injuries to these animals.”

In another Instagram post, Ratan Tata shared, “After having changed families multiple times, “Sur” no longer has a family to look after her. One can still see the spirit and love she carries and the hope to belong somewhere. It is heartbreaking to get attached to someone never to see them again. The last time, all of you generously helped me find Myra a loving family. I hope together we can do the same for “Sur”. If you think you can open your home to her, or know someone who can, give it some serious thought and fill in the link in my bio. I truly wait for the day when we no longer have to do this again. #onehomeatatime.”
