New Delhi: The Hockey India League men’s auction was concluded on Monday with a total of 192 players sold across the eight franchises for the revamped tournament. The two-day auction for more than 500 male players was held at the Hyatt Regency hotel in New Delhi.
Indian men’s captain Harmanpreet Singh turned out to be the most expensive purchase made in the men’s auction. The ace drag-flicker was sold to Soorma Hockey Club for INR 78 lakh on Day 1, where a total of 54 players went under the hammer.
The costliest overseas buy was Argentine-turned-German national team player Gonzalo Peillat who was roped in by Hyderabad Toofans for Rs 68 lakh.
On Day 2, Belgium midfielder Victor Wegnez attracted the biggest bids with Soorma, the Punjab-based club shelled out INR 40 lakh to secure the services of the 28-year-old. Gonzalo Peillat, the Argentine-turned-German player, was the most expensive pick among overseas players after Hyderabad Toofans purchased him for INR 68 lakh.
The players went under three categories in the base prices of INR 10 lakh, INR 5 lakh and INR 2 lakh. A total of 128 Indian players were sold in the HIL auction along with 64 overseas players.
