Washington: Action movie star and former Republican California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has endorsed Democratic candidate Kamala Harris for US president on Wednesday, saying, “I will always be an American before I am a Republican.”
The “Terminator” star expressed frustration with Republicans who refused to concede that Donald Trump lost the 2020 election and criticised the Republican nominee’s statement describing America as “like a garbage can for the rest of the world.”
Schwarzenegger shared that, as governor, he learned to “love policy and hate politics,” adding, “I hate politics more than ever.” He voiced disappointment with both parties, stating, “I don’t like either party right now,” arguing that neither is addressing U.S. budget deficits and that some Democratic policies contribute to rising crime rates. “I want to tune out,” Schwarzenegger wrote. “But I can’t.”
“Because rejecting the results of an election is as un-American as it gets,” he wrote, and added, “Calling America ‘a trash can for the world’ is so unpatriotic, it makes me furious.”
“And I will always be an American before I am a Republican,” Schwarzenegger said, explaining his decision to vote for Harris and her running mate Tim Walz.
Trump’s “garbage can” comment criticized the Biden/Harris administration’s approach to the U.S.-Mexico border, saying lax enforcement allowed other countries to “dump people they don’t want” in the United States.
Schwarzenegger, who immigrated to the U.S. from Austria, first built a successful bodybuilding career and then starred in 1980s hits like “Conan the Barbarian,” “The Terminator,” and “Predator.” He served as California’s governor from 2003 to 2011.
