Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin said India, China and Brazil could act as ‘mediators’ in potential peace talks with Ukraine following the ongoing conflict in Kyiv.
“We respect our friends, partners, who, I believe, are sincerely interested in resolving all issues related to this conflict. This is primarily the People’s Republic of China, Brazil, and India. I am constantly in contact with our colleagues on this issue. And I have no doubt that the leaders of these countries, we have a trusting relationship with them, sincerely strive to help understand all the details of this complex process,” the leader spoke on Thursday at the plenary session of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok.
This comes after Russian and Ukrainian negotiators reached an agreement in the first weeks of the war in Turkey, which was never implemented but could serve as the basis for talks.
Putin further added that he never refused to negotiate with Ukraine. However, he asserted that he would not do such talks based on “ephemeral demands” but on those documents that were agreed upon and virtually initiated in Istanbul.
India’s Role in Russia-Ukraine War Peace Talks
In August, during his visit to the war-hit Ukraine, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that he had come to Kyiv as a messenger of peace for the Ukraine-Russuia war saying the solution will not be on the battlefield, it’s only possible through dialogue and diplomacy.
In a joint statement with Zelenskyy, PM said, “I express my gratitude to you that you helped in the evacuation of Indian nationals and student during the time of crisis. India is standing beside you for humanitarian support.”
“When I Met Russian President Vladimir Putin, I told him too that this is not an era of war,” PM Modi said.
“I thank you (President Zelenskyy) for your warm welcome to me and my delegation… Today is a very historic day for India and Ukraine relations… A PM of India has come to Ukraine for the first time which is in itself a historic event… Tomorrow is your national day and we congratulate you for this… We pray for peace (in Ukraine)…,” he added.
