Shreyas Iyer sends strong message to selectors with blazing century in Ranji Trophy

New Delhi: Just when Indian batters are struggling to score runs in the longest format of the game, seasoned batter Shreyas Iyer made a mark with a sensational century for Mumbai in the game against Odisha in ongoing Ranji Trophy on Wednesday. Iyer, who has been ignored from the national team for sometime now and was also left out of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad for the upcoming edition of IPL, exhibited a dominant show for his side Mumbai.

Iyer has sent a strong message to the BCCI selectors ahead of the crucial Border-Gavaskar Trophy, squads for which were announced a week earlier. Iyer smashed an unbeaten 152-run knock to power Mumbai to a strong total of 385/3 in their Elite Group A clash’s first day. His innings, which came off just 164 deliveries, included 18 boundaries and 4 massive sixes and it came at an impressive strike rate of 92.68.

Mumbai strongly placed at stumps

At stumps on the first day, Mumbai were placed firmly on 385 runs, with Iyer and other centurion Siddesh Lad (116) holding fort for the side. The two middle-order batters tore into the Odisha bowling, putting on unbroken 231-run stand for the fourth wicket. This was Iyer’s second consecutive century in Ranji Trophy this season as he scored a remarkable 142-run knock in his last appearance.

Batting first, Mumbai lost the wicket of opener Ayush Mhatre early in the innings for just 18 runs while Angkrish Raghuvanshi stood firm with Lad taking forward Mumbai’s innings. Raghuvanshi was Mumbai’s second batter to depart but he made a blazing contribution of 92 runs before returning back to the pavilion. Skipper Ajinkya Rahane was the next batter in but unfortunately, could not make any impact in the innings and had to depart for a duck off the first delivery he faced.
