New Delhi: Gautam Gambhir has had a mixed start to his tenure as the head coach of Team India. Under his guidance, India lost an ODI series against Sri Lanka after 27 years and a home Test series against New Zealand after 10 years.
Tom Latham and Co. registered victories in Bengaluru, Pune, and Mumbai. The Blackcaps won the first Test by 8 wickets. After that, they recorded a 113-run victory in the second Test, followed by a 25-run win in the third Test. After the loss, India slipped to second position in the World Test Championship points table.
Gambhir was appointed India’s head coach after the successful tenure of Rahul Dravid. Under Dravid’s guidance, Team India reached in the finals of the World Test Championship and ODI World Cup in 2023 and won the 2024 T20 World Cup by defeating South Africa in the final.
Gambhir to be removed as Test head coach if Team India lose in Australia
Gautam Gambhir has failed to deliver consistent results in Test and ODI cricket. As per a report by Dainik Jagran, BCCI could sack him as a Test head coach if India lose against Australia in the five-match Test series. The report further stated that the Indian board may opt for a split coaching role to improve the team’s performance in Test cricket.
After losing the home Test series against New Zealand, Rohit and Co. need to win at least four matches in Australia to book a spot in the third consecutive World Test Championship (WTC) final.
According to the PTI report, the BCCI conducted a six-hour-long meeting with captain Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir after the series whitewash against New Zealand. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, President Roger Binny and the Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar also attended the meeting.
As per the report, the board members were not happy with the team management’s decision to opt for a rank-turner in the Mumbai Test after losing the second Test in Pune on a similar kind of pitch. The decision to rest star pacer Jasprit Bumrah was also questioned by the board members.
