Neeraj Chopra teams up with javelin icon who holds the world record of 98.48 throw

New Delhi: Double Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra has announced the beginnings of a fresh and an exciting chapter in his professional career. Neeraj, on Saturday, announced his partnership with legend of javelin throw Jan Zelezny, who is on board as his new coach. This comes after the star Indian javelin thrower announced his separation from long-time coach Klaus Bartonietz, who announced his retirement.

Meanwhile, Zelezny, who happens to be a three-time Olympic and world champion and the current world record holder, has been an idol to Chopra from a long time. Zelezny holds the world record of 98.48 throw, in Germany back in 1996. The newly-appointed coach will be funded by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports’ Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS).

What Neeraj said

“Growing up, I admired Jan’s technique and precision and spent a lot of time watching videos of him. He was the best in the sport for so many years, and I believe that working with him will be invaluable because our throwing styles are similar, and his knowledge is unmatched. It’s an honour to have Jan by my side as I push towards the next level in my career, and I can’t wait to get started,” said Chopra, following the announcement.
