Australia Test series could be a gamechanger for Virat Kohli, believes Ricky Ponting

New Delhi: India’s batting ace Virat Kohli is not currently at the best of his form in cricket as he has string of low scores behind him which has kept him and his fans quiet for quite some time. But… legendary cricketer Ricky Ponting feels that Kohli shouldn’t be judged on the basis of current form and that he can return to his original form during the upcoming five-Test Border-Gavaskar series, given the class he carries with him.

The highly awaited series will commence in Perth on November 22 and Pat Cummins’ Australia will have a tough job to stop India in the series. Kohli, as always, will be a vital cog in the Indian setup. India are eyeing a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final and needs to be at their very best against Australia. India’s famed home dominance in Test was torn apart by New Zealand as they decimated the hosts 0-3, and Kohli could just produce 93.

But Ponting is of the opinion that he has full faith in Kohli’s fighting abilities. “I’ve said it before about Virat, you don’t ever question the greats of the game. There’s no doubt he’s a great of the game,” Ponting told ICC.

The 36-year-old batter used to average 50-plus runs between 2016-19 but his average has dropped to 31.68. “I know he loves playing against Australia. And his record (in Australia) is very good,” he added.

BGT could revive Kohli – Ponting

The former right-handed batter also believes that the Border Gavaskar Trophy could see the revival of Kohli. It is noteworthy that Kohli has slipped in the ICC Test rankings as well. He is not in the top-20 list for the first time in 10 years and Ponting sees this as a matter of concern. “If there’s a time for him to turn it around, it’d be this series. So, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Virat make runs in the first game,” Ponting added.

Since the start of this year, Kohli has averaged just 22.72 in six Tests which is the lowest for him in the format in a year since his debut in 2011.

Virat Kohli has been on a low run of form lately, specially in the Test cricket. He is a part of the Indian squad that will tour Australia for the five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
