New Delhi: India have been dealt with yet another injury blow ahead of the start of the much-anticipated Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia. Star batter Shubman Gill has reportedly picked up a finger injury ahead of the series opener in Perth which gets underway on November 22. Gill injured his finger during the match simulation in Perth.
As per a report in the Times of India, sources revealed that Gill injured his finger while fielding in the slips during the match simulation. However, it will be too early to rule the batter out of the first Test against Australia which kicks off next week. Nonetheless, the window of recovery is a small one for the batter whose participation in the Perth Test remains in doubt now.
Gill is not the first Indian player to pick up an injury ahead of the start of the all-important Border Gavaskar Trophy as the likes of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul also suffered injury blows during the match simulation on Friday. Rahul was struck on his elbow while batting and had to leave the pitch with the physio.
Kohli also had some injury concerns but was reportedly adjudged fit after undergoing scans on Friday. Meanwhile, Rahul’s injury is also expected to be minor, and the right-hander is expected to be fit and available for the first Test in Perth against the hosts.
“Virat Kohli is absolutely fine. He batted in the match simulation without any discomfort and also had a hit in the net after he got out. No concerns there,” a source was quoted as saying by the Times of India.
Will KL Rahul open for India in 1st Test?
Rahul is one of the strongest contenders to open the batting for India in the 1st Test against Australia in Perth if skipper Rohit Sharma remains unavailable after the berth of his second child. Rohit was blessed with a baby boy on Friday and is currently training for the series in Mumbai. He is yet to join the rest of the Indian squad in Australia and his participation in the 1st Test remains uncertain.
