The experts feel that such reports from a country like Canada, which is considered to be relatively prosperous, are worrying and shocking.
The “Who’s Hungry” report, released by Daily Bread Food Bank and North York Harvest Food Bank, highlights Canada’s growing struggle for food security. The number of first-time food bank users is also rising, putting additional pressure on already-strained resources.
Experts point to rising housing costs and inflation as key contributors to this crisis, with 25% of Toronto households experiencing food insecurity. Newcomers to Canada are disproportionately affected, with 32 per cent of food bank clients having arrived in the country within the past decade.
Food Banks Canada CEO Christine Beardsley attributes this crisis to underinvestment in public services, infrastructure, and housing, calling it a “policy failure”. She emphasizes the need for urgent action to address poverty and food insecurity.
As the situation continues to worsen, food banks are struggling to keep up with demand. Daily Bread Food Bank CEO Neil Hetherington notes that the number of clients now exceeds the entire population of Toronto, a trend that is “beyond comprehension”.
