Javier Aguirre targeted by crowd after Mexico’s loss to Honduras

New Delhi: After Mexico’s 2-0 defeat against Honduras, coach Javier Aguirre was hit by a can at his head after the final whistle, leaving him with blood pouring down his face. The drink was thrown from the stands and stuck the Mexican boss as he approached his opposition’s manager, Reinald Rueda, for a post-match handshake during the first leg of the CONCACAF Nations League quarter-final.

Aguirre, though, brushed off the incident and congratulated Rueda with blood running down from his head. In the post-match press conference he noted that Honduras were the better side on the day and hence deserved the win. He felt that he could only congratulate Honduras for playing a good game and he was going to try and “lift team spirit” after the humbling loss.

While the 65-year-old noted that he wasn’t going to complaint and is often the part and parcel of the game, the Mexican Football Federation felt that the behaviour was against the spirit of the game. Further they urged CONCACAF to take immediate action over the incident as football was for entertainment and “not a battleground”.

CONCAF statement on Aguirre getting hit

COCACAF have said that they will be investigating the incident as the security of teams and fans is the governing body’s top priority. The football body of the American continent further noted that such “violent behaviours” had no space in the sport.

Rueda also noted later that the incident had taken the charm from his team’s win. He noted that the crowd cannot behave in such manner, hitting coaches. For Honduras, it was a great game with Celtic’ Luis Palma scoring a brace, after the winger came off the bench.  The next leg in on November 20th, with the winner qualifying for ther 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
