Alyssa Healy doubtful for India ODIs at home after being ruled out of WBBL 2024

New Delhi: Australian women cricket team captain Alyssa Healy has recently been ruled out of the ongoing Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) after suffering a knee injury. The Sydney Sixers wicketkeeper-batter now faces the challenge of recovering to full fitness for the home ODI series against India next month.

On Saturday, WBBL franchise Sydney Sixers confirmed that Healy won’t participate for the team in the rest of the tournament after going through the injury. This adds to the troubles of the 34-year-old who sustained a foot injury during the Women’s T20 World Cup in UAE last month, which forced her on the bench in Australia’s semifinal defeat to South Africa.

Why Alyssa Healy’s recovery can be challenging for India ODIs?

The Australian women national team will host India for three ODI matches from December 5 to 11 in what is their start to the preparations of defending their ICC Women’s ODI World Cup title next year in India. The Australian squad is reportedly said to be announced next weekend.

Though Healy has a fortnight to recover for the India ODIs, a cautious approach should be examined given that the Southern Stars will play nine ODI matches in total against three teams (India, New Zealand and England) in a space of 43 days before playing three T20 Internationals and one-off Test in the complete package of Women’s Ashes until February 2.

In case Healy doesn’t recover by the time of the India ODIs, all-rounder Tahila McGrath will continue to shoulder the captaincy duties as she stepped up during the last couple of matches of the World T20 last month.

Healy played four matches for the Ellyse Perry-led Sydney Sixers in the start of WBBL 2024 season. She could only add 20 runs from four innings at a below-par strike rate of 90.90 and an average of 5.
