Some EU foreign ministers on Monday backed the US move to allow Ukraine to use longer ranged missile systems supplied by Washington to strike targets inside Russia.
Speaking on arrival in Brussels for a regular monthly meeting, Lithuanian Foreign Minister, Gabrielius Landsbergis said he was glad the decision had “finally” been made.
But he added it was “unfortunate” that so many arguments have been used in the past “to impose restrictions” on the use of Western-delivered weapons.
Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp welcomed the move, saying despite Russia’s warnings over such involvement, President Vladimir Putin “only listens to facts on the ground”.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said President Emmanuel Macron had shown his support for such a move for the last six months.
At their meeting the ministers will discuss the situation in Ukraine and in the Middle East, as well as the EU-US transatlantic relations in light of the outcome of the US presidential election.
