South Africa pacer reprimanded for breaching ICC Code of Conduct in 4th T20I vs India

New Delhi: South Africa pacer Gerald Coetzee has been reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for a Code of Conduct breach during the 4th T20I against India in Johannesburg last week. Suryakumar Yadav-led India thrashed South Africa by 135 runs in the 4th T20I to clinch the four-match series 3-1.

Coetzee has been reprimanded for showing dissent at the on-field umpire’s decision during the match. Unhappy after a wide decision during India’s innings, the Proteas pacer had hurled an inappropriate word at the umpire. He admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by the match referee Andy Pycroft. The South African pacer was also handed 1 demerit point for his act.

“In the fourth T20I between South Africa and India, Gerald Coetzee was found to have breached Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to ‘showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match’,” the ICC said in a press release.

“Coetzee received a reprimand and had one demerit point added to his disciplinary record. He admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, therefore no formal hearing was needed,” it added.

Coetzee will have to be wary of his actions on the field going forward as he can face a potential ban if he continues to accumulate demerit points. If a player reaches 4 demerit points in 24 months, the demerit points are then converted into suspension points leading to a ban on the player. Two suspension points can get a player banned from 1 Test, 2 ODIs or 2 T20Is, whatever comes first.

India clinch series 3-1

Talking about the 4th T20I, India produced a stupendous batting display courtesy of unbeaten centuries from Tilak Varma and Sanju Samson to thrash South Africa by 135 runs and win the series 3-1. Tilak slammed 120 off just 47 balls while Samson hammered 109 off 56 balls to share a brilliant 210-run stand for the 3rd wicket and propel India to a massive total of 283/1 in 20 overs.

Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel then combined to run through the South African batting line-up with 5 wickets between them. The Proteas were bundled out for 148 runs in 18.2 overs to suffer a heavy defeat and concede the series 3-1.
