Aston Villa owner Nassef Sawiris backs Man City against Premier League amendments to APT regulations

New Delhi: Aston Villa owner Nassef Sawiris has backed Manchester City in opposing the Premier League’s proposed amendments to rules on commercial deals. These changes, which affect Associated Party Transaction (APT) regulations, are set to be voted on by all 20 Premier League clubs this Friday. However, Villa and City believe the vote should be delayed.

Sawiris, in a statement to The Telegraph, explained why Aston Villa would vote against the changes. He suggested a “fresh start” was needed and argued that postponing the vote until February would allow the Premier League to incorporate tribunal findings and improve the chances of unanimous agreement among clubs. He added that a united vote could better position the league ahead of the Government’s incoming independent football regulator.

Manchester City had already voiced their objections earlier, writing to other clubs about their concerns. They called the proposed changes “unlawful” and hinted at further legal action if the vote passes. Villa echoed these concerns, warning that a rushed decision could lead to unnecessary legal disputes and escalate costs.

The timing of this dispute is significant. The Premier League needs at least 14 clubs to vote in favour of the amendments, but City’s opposition, now joined by Villa, complicates matters. This disagreement also highlights the growing tension between Manchester City and the Premier League, especially as City is already under scrutiny for alleged financial breaches.

Sawiris emphasised the importance of reducing legal expenses and avoiding further conflicts. He said a delayed vote could lead to better cooperation among clubs, presenting a stronger and more united Premier League to the global stage.
