Abrar Ahmed joins Abdul Qadir in elite list with 4-fer on ODI debut for Pakistan

New Delhi: Abrar Ahmed made an impressive ODI debut for Pakistan in the 2nd ODI against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo on Tuesday, November 26. The 26-year-old leg-spinner picked up a four-wicket haul in his debut game to help Pakistan thrash Zimbabwe by 10 wickets and level the three-match ODI series 1-1.

Abrar joined legendary Pakistan spinner Abdul Qadir in an elite club as he became only the second spinner to take a 4-wicket haul on ODI debut for the Men in Green. The spinner became the fourth Pakistani bowler overall to take 4 wickets in his debut ODI match as he ran riot against the hosts’ batting line-up in Bulawayo.

Abrar finished with excellent figures of 4/33 as Pakistan bundled out Zimbabwe for a paltry 145 runs in the 2nd ODI. He opened his account with the wicket of opener Joylord Gumbie, cleaning him up cheaply on just 5 off 14 balls before dismissing Brian Bennett, Richard Ngarava and Brandon Mavutta in quick succession to complete his 4-fer.

Abrar’s 4/33 against Zimbabwe is the 3rd best figures by a Pakistani bowler on ODI debut and the 2nd best by a spinner for the country. Former pacer Zakir Khan, who finished with figures of 4/19 on his ODI debut in 1984, holds the record for the best figures by a Pakistani bowler on debut in the format.

Best figures by Pakistan bowlers on ODI debut:

4/19 – Zakir Khan (1984)
4/21 – Abdul Qadir (1983)
4/33 – Abrar Ahmed (2024)
4/46 – Sarfraz Nawaz (1973)
3/24 – Faisal Akram (2024)

Abrar made his debut for Pakistan along with 31-year-old batter Tayyab Tahir, who didn’t get a chance to bat in the game. Abrar has already made his Test and T20I debut for Pakistan. He has so far played 8 Tests and 3 T20Is in his international career with 39 and 2 wickets in the two formats, respectively. He is one of the most highly rated spinners in Pakistan at present.

Saim Ayub’s century helps Pakistan thrash Zimbabwe in 2nd ODI

After the impressive show from the bowlers, young opener Saim Ayub slammed a cracking century to help Pakistan make light work of the 146-run chase and thrash Zimbabwe by 10 wickets in the 2nd ODI. Ayub played a brilliant knock of unbeaten 113 off 62 balls laced with 17 fours and three sixes. He was well supported by his opening partner Abdullah Shafique, who scored 32 off 48 balls with the help of 4 boundaries.
