Accept hybrid model or face ouster: ICC’s ultimatum to PCB amid Champions Trophy row

New Delhi: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has categorically told the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to accept the hybrid model being proposed for the Champions Trophy 2025 or be ready to get ousted from the tournament amid the boiling row, according to a report published in news agency PTI. Pakistan’s firm stance of not agreeing for a hybrid model for CT 2025 led to an inconclusive meeting on Friday, where a solution was expected.

The emergent meeting in Dubai which was meant to pacify the problem and come out with the best possible solution for the marquee event could not achieve success after Pakistan once again rejected the hybrid model despite India’s firm refusal to travel there owing to security concerns. The big ICC event is supposed to be held in Pakistan in February-March 2025 and due to political tensions between both the countries, India will not travel to the neighbouring nation.

Board members sympathetic towards Pakistan’s situation

After the meeting ended without any concrete solution, it was learnt that most of the ICC board members were sympathetic towards Pakistan’s current situation but they still advised PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi to accept the proposed model as it seemed to be the only possible solution for the current imbroglio. If a hybrid model is adopted for the tournament, India’s share of Champions Trophy matches will be held in the UAE.

The meeting on Friday was chaired by deputy chairperson Imran Khwaja because of outgoing chief Greg Barclay’s absence for unspecified reasons. The meeting did not take much time to end as Naqvi maintained his stance of not agreeing for a hybrid model. Naqvi attended the meeting in person as he has been in Dubai since last two days to push Pakistan’s case while BCCI secretary Jay Shah attended the meeting virtually. Shah replaces Barclay as the new ICC chief on December 1.
