Dhaka: In recent shocking developments, Bangladeshi actor Shanto Khan along with his father and producer Selim Khan were lynched by an unruly mob as violent protests gripped Bangladesh this week.
Selim, the controversial chairman of Lakshmipur Model Union Parishad (UP) and his son were beaten to death on Monday, the Dhaka Tribune reported.
It added that the incident occurred on Monday, earlier this week while fleeing from their area when they were encountered by public outrage. The two tried protecting themselves from the mob by firing shots from their pistols but they faced a similar agitation again where they were thrashed by the mob and later succumbed to their injuries.
Bangladesh has been witnessing one of the most violent protests in history where some 400 people died in weeks-long protests.
Fresh protests erupted on Monday, where student groups and mobs clashed with police leaving nearly 100 dead.
Selim Khan is known to be a controversial figure who had been accused by the locals of illegally extracting sand from the Padma-Meghna River. A case was filed regarding this issue which landed him in prison and was also facing an ongoing case at the Anti-Corruption Commission.
He was also an expelled leader of the Awami League, the supporters of which have been facing attacks for the past several days.
Meanwhile, his son, Shanto, a well-known actor made his debut with ‘Prem Chor’ in 2019 and later worked in ‘Piya Re’ in 2021, ‘Bubujaan’ in 2023 and ‘Anto Nagar’ in 2024.
Both father and son had connections in the West Bengal industry. The Kolkata-based actors expressed shock and offered condolences.
Popular actor Rajatabha Dutta said I was stunned after hearing the news that he and his father were killed. We don’t know the circumstances leading to their deaths. It saddens my heart to learn they were killed. Artists like us who thrive on art and creativity always yearn for peace, amity and brotherhood.”
Meanwhile, Actress Kaushani Mukhopadhyay, who starred opposite Shanto in the Bangladeshi film Piya Re, said “I can’t believe he is no more. Shanto was very respectful and had ambitions to make a significant impact in the industry.”
