Contact lenses have become a part of life for people who have power, but can they be this dangerous and if yes then how and why does it happen?

Risk of Lenses for Eyes?

In conversation with News9, Dr Anjal Shah, Consultant Ophthalmologist, Cataract and Refractive Surgeon, Dr Sachdev Maxivision Eye Hospital, “Wearing contact lenses carries risks such as infections, dry eyes, and irritation. Poor hygiene or extended wear can lead to serious complications, including corneal ulcers and vision loss. It’s crucial to follow care instructions, use lenses as prescribed, and consult an eye care professional regularly to minimise these risks.”

Risk Factors for Contact Lens Complications:

1. Poor Hygiene: Not properly cleaning or handling lenses can introduce bacteria, fungi, and parasites.

2. Overnight Wear: Wearing lenses overnight significantly increases the risk of complications.

3. Improper Lens Care: Using expired or incorrect cleaning solutions can lead to infections.

How It Happens:

Infections: Microorganisms can accumulate on lenses, leading to infections like keratitis.
Hypoxia: Extended wear reduces oxygen supply to the cornea, causing hypoxia, dryness, and discomfort.
Corneal Scratches: Misuse or damaged lenses can scratch the cornea, increasing infection risk.
Environmental Factors: Exposure to smoke, dust, and swimming with lenses can exacerbate problems.

Preventative Measures:

Regular Eye Check-ups: Regular visits to an eye care professional are essential.
Strict Adherence to Care Guidelines: Following care instructions precisely can prevent most complications.

By understanding and mitigating these risks, contact lens wearers can maintain eye health and reduce the likelihood of severe complications.
