New Delhi: Indian men’s team captain Rohit Sharma is reportedly said to turn up for a practice session just 10 days before the Mumbai cricket team returns to the second phase of the Ranji Trophy 2024. The Ajinkya Rahane-led side is scheduled to face Jammu and Kashmir from January 23 to 26 in Mumbai.
Following the dismal performance with the bat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Rohit and other out-of-form batters were advised to return to domestic cricket and regain their mojo. The Indian captain scored 31 runs in five innings at an appalling average of 6.20. As a result, Rohit dropped himself from the team in the final Test in Sydney, which India lost by six wickets and eventually lost the series 3-1.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir in his assessment in the post-match press conference did stressed on players should participate in domestic cricket whenever they are available to play.
According to a report by The Indian Express, Rohit has informed the Mumbai team management that he will turn up for the practice session for the Ranji Trophy. The practice isRo scheduled for Tuesday (January 14) morning at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. However, it is not yet decided whether Rohit will play for the Ranji Trophy match or not. The 37-year-old international will keep the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) updated about his decision soon.
Shubman Gill to play Ranji Trophy
The report from the Indian Express also mentioned that top order batter Shubman Gill, who made 93 runs in five innings against Australia at 18.60, will be available for Punjab in their Ranji Trophy fixture against Karnataka. Gill wasn’t available for the first Test in Perth after sustaining a thumb injury. He played in Adelaide and Brisbane but then was dropped for the Boxing-Day Test in Melbourne only to return for the final Test in place of Rohit. Gill’s scores in the five-Test series were 31, 28, 1, 20, 13.
Following a disappointing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill are likely to return to domestic cricket. Rohit plans to join Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy practice sessions, while Gill will play for Punjab. Their participation aims to regain form after struggling in Australia, highlighting the importance of domestic cricket in player development and India’s overall performance.
