Mumbai: The Jagannath Rath Yatra kicked off in Ahmedabad with enthusiasm, attracting large crowds of devotees on Sunday, July 7. Members of the Khalashi community pulled the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Balbhadra, and Subhadra as per tradition. Thousands gathered along the route to catch a glimpse of the deities.
Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel conducted the ‘PahindVidhi,’ symbolically cleaning the path with a golden broom for Jagannath’s chariot. The procession, following a centuries-old custom, began from the 400-year-old Lord Jagannath temple in Jamalpur around 7 am, passing through various neighbourhoods in the Old City before returning by 8 pm.
The chariots—Nandighosha, Darpadalana, and Taladhwaja—were brought to the Singha Dwara of Puri Srimandir ahead of the Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also attended the Mangla Aarti.
CM Bhupendra Patel conveyed his wishes for the Rath Yatra festival, stating, “I extend my best wishes to all citizens on the occasion of the Rath Yatra festival. The Rath Yatra in Ahmedabad is known as the largest after the Rath Yatra in Jagannath Puri. On this auspicious day, Lord Jagannath himself emerges to bless the citizens. All necessary arrangements have been made to ensure a peaceful and safe Rath Yatra. May this sacred festival bring happiness, peace, and prosperity to Gujarat and the entire nation.”
