New Delhi: Cancer is a major health burden across the world, and the rising cases every year are creating a huge threat to deal with. For years, scientists have been trying to find a way to cure it but haven’t succeeded yet. To make things a little easier and make the cancer detection process simpler, researchers have developed a new Artificial Intelligence tool that may spot prostate cancer with 84 per cent accuracy, according to UCLA.
As per the researchers, the tool outperforms doctors, who have a 67 per cent accuracy rate. The tool is called Unfold AI, created by an AI program created by Avenida Health helps in visualising the possibility of cancer by examining the clinical data using an algorithm. The tool has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration. For the conducting of the study, seven urologists and three radiologists were involved in it who analysed 50 cases where tumours had been removed, looking for signs of residual cancer.
After some months, the AI performed the same analysis and the researchers found a “negative margin rate,” indicating the absence of cancer cells around the removed tissue that was 45 times higher in cases spotted by the AI. It also significantly reduced the risk of leaving behind cancer.
AI tool performed better than doctors
According to the researcher, the AI-generated outcomes help in deciding whether to go for focal therapy or more radical treatments like radical prostatectomy or radiation therapy should be used. This makes sure that optimal cancer cure, personalization of care, and alignment with patients’ quality of life goals.
The research team believes that the AI tool could lead to more correct diagnoses and targeted treatments and has the potential in the need for total gland removal. However, it is also linked to side effects such as incontinence and impotence.
Prostate cancer detection
The new AI technology is a significant advancement in prostate cancer detection and treatment. It offers potential and more correct treatment. However, careful consideration of data quality reliance, privacy and cost is important for the integration of the technology.
