New Delhi: Australian player Alex Carey grabbed a sensational catch in their first match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 against England played at the Gadaffi Stadium in Lahore on Saturday. The daunting efforts from the South Australian led to the dismissal of England opener Phil Salt as England lost their first wicket.
Australia won the toss and asked England to bat first. In the second over of the match, Salt went to smash Australian left-arm seamer Ben Dwarshuis, moving slightly toward the leg stump, and whipped the ball. It was a decent shot and could have made it to the boundary ropes had Carey not intervened.
Early impact of Carey’s catch
Carey, who wasn’t keeping the wickets behind the stumps in the England game, put an acrobatic dive, moved to his right from mid-on and plucked the ball with his right hand, a bewitching moment that unfolded in front of the spectators, as well as the ones watching in front of their electronic screens.

Carey later on picked up another catch to dismiss England wicketkeeper Jamie Smith for 15 with Dwarshuis accounting for the wicket of his and Australia.
Western Australia’s Josh Inglis was given the responsibility to don the gloves behind the wickets in a move where the two-time champions have fielded both their wicketkeepers in the match. This wouldn’t have been a possibility had all the core players been available for selection.
In order to bolster its batting unit, Australia didn’t pick all-rounder Aaron Hardie and played two left-arm quicks in Spencer Johnson and Dwarshuis. Adam Zampa was the only frontline spinner with the likes of Glenn Maxwell, Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne expected to roll their arms.
Alex Carey’s incredible diving catch dismissed England opener Phil Salt in Australia’s opening ICC Champions Trophy 2025 match against England. This crucial moment, coupled with Australia’s tactical decisions including fielding both wicketkeepers, Josh Inglis and Carey himself, set the tone for the game.
