New Delhi: Veteran singer Alka Yagnik has been diagnosed with a rare hearing disorder and she announced the news for her fans with a note on Instagram. On Monday, she posted a picture of herself and revealed that she had stopped hearing anything after stepping out of a flight. It was then that she revealed that it was a case of rare sensory neural nerve hearing loss triggered by a viral attack. While talking about her diagnosis, the singer further added that the diagnosis came to her as a ‘major setback’.
“To all my fans, friends, followers and well-wishers. A few weeks ago, as I walked out of a flight, I suddenly felt I was not able to hear anything. Having mustered some courage in the weeks following the episode, I want to break my silence now for all my friends and well-wishers who have been asking me why I’m missing in action,” she wrote in the Instagram post.
“It has been diagnosed by my docs as a rare sensory neural nerve hearing loss, due to a viral attack…This sudden, major setback has caught me completely unaware. As I attempt to come to terms with it please keep me in your prayers,” she added in the post.
What is sensory neural nerve hearing loss?
In an interaction with News9Live, Dr. Rohit Saxena,HoD, ENT Department, Sharda Hospital, explained what sensory neural nerve hearing loss is.
“Damage to the inner ear (cochlea) or the neuronal pathways that connect the inner ear to the brain can cause sensorineural hearing loss. Aging, high noise exposure, infection, head injury, ototoxic medication may be the cause of it. This can happen rapid loss of hearing (over a few days) with no clear cause. Several viruses are known to cause sensorineural hearing loss like HIV, Mumps, Influenza, Measles etc,” said Dr Saxena.
The expert went on to say that in this case, sounds may seem unclear or high pitched sounds are not audible to the patient like voice of women, door bells, alarms etc. It also leads to difficulty in understanding speech because of noisy environment. Patient may feel hissing continuous sound in ears. There are various technologies are available which can help you with the hearing aids. To enhance hearing and verbal comprehension, turn up the volume of noises. If its sensory neural hearing loss, apart from steroids, vitamin B 12 also helps & vasodilators to improve nerve function.
How to reduce the risk of sensory neural nerve hearing loss?
One should never use headphone on high volume or long term usage of headphone should be avoided. Clear your ears on regular basis. If there is family history, then be careful. Try to manage chronic conditions like diabetes, BP etc which may affect hearing. In order for optimal results and preserve the greatest amount of hearing function, early diagnosis and treatments are essential. Sudden sensory neural hearing loss is an entity which can occur due to viral infections.
