Ottawa: Canada is on high alert for a potential surge of immigrants from the United States, as Donald Trump ‘s victory may bring in stricter immigration policies in America, authorities informed on Friday.
“We’re on high alert,” said Sergeant Charles Poirier, spokesperson for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, AFP reported.
Canadian authorities said that all eyes are on border as trump strict migration policy could force immigrants to flee to Canada.
‘’All of our eyes are looking at the border to see what’s going to happen… because we know that Trump’s stance on immigration might drive up illegal and irregular migration to Canada,” he said.
US President-elect Donald Trump has said many times in his campaign about the immigrant’s issue in the USA and how he is going to bring strict laws to prevent undocumented people to stay in America. He has vowed to enforce the largest mass deportation in American history, accusing immigrants of ‘poisoning the blood of our country.’
In his previous presidential term from 2017 to 2021, thousands of migrants, including many Haitians who had lost US protections, fled north to Canada seeking refuge.
“We’re on high alert,” said Sergeant Charles Poirier, spokesperson for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, AFP reported.
Canadian officials are preparing for an influx, with border agencies and immigration services on standby for any potential rise in numbers crossing into Canada.
In Ottawa, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland met Friday with a group of ministers tasked with handling thorny issues that might emerge between Canada and the incoming Trump administration.
